Chief Human Resources Officer UAB Medicine

John Petrov is Chief Human Resources Officer at UAB Medicine, where he oversees workforce strategy for more than 37,000 employees across one of Alabama’s largest academic health systems. Joining UAB in January 2024, Petrov brings over 20 years of experience in healthcare human resources leadership. He previously served as Senior Vice President and CHRO at Virginia Commonwealth University Health System, and held executive HR roles at Guthrie in Pennsylvania and CHI Saint Joseph Health in Kentucky. Recognized by Becker’s Hospital Review as one of the “CHROs to Know” in 2025, Petrov is known for fostering positive workplace culture, advancing recruitment and retention initiatives, and aligning HR practices with organizational growth. A graduate of Briar Cliff University and Colorado Technical University, he also serves as adjunct faculty at Bethel University of Tennessee. At UAB Medicine, Petrov is dedicated to supporting caregivers and driving innovation in human capital strategy.
